Planning, timing and where to sleep

Base yourself in Batumi rather than spreading across three towns. The old town around Piazza Square and the streets behind the boulevard put you within walking distance of the cable car, the park and the beaches, which matters when children need to nap or change clothes mid-afternoon. Hotels in this area fill quickly in July and August, so booking a few weeks ahead is sensible; the same rooms are easier to find in May and late September. For longer stays, apartments near 6 May Park suit families better than hotel rooms.

One practical note: many day trips are easiest with a hired driver, and prices are negotiated per car rather than per person. Agree the route, the waiting time and the return hour before setting off. Skip the long-distance dash to Svaneti or Tusheti with small children on a short trip; those are multi-day journeys, not day trips. Pick two outings, leave one afternoon completely free, and the trip will go better than any itinerary that fills every hour.

FAQ

Questions people ask before booking

Batumi Boulevard and 6 May Park need no transport at all and are flat and shaded. The Botanical Garden is the best short drive, about eight kilometres north, with shuttle carts that save small legs on the upper terraces.

Not strictly. Marshrutkas run south to Gonio and east towards Keda, but a hired driver with agreed waiting time is far easier for families and lets you combine stops. Fix the route and return hour before departure.

May, June and September offer warm sea and manageable heat, and the Makhuntseti valley is green. July and August are hot and busy, so plan outings before 10:00 and keep afternoons free for the beach or the hotel pool.
