Oni: travel guide

Oni is the small main town of Upper Racha, in the mountains of north-western Georgia, on the Rioni river.

About Oni

Oni is the small main town of Upper Racha, in the mountains of north-western Georgia, on the Rioni river. It is the last town before the high mountain villages, which makes it the natural starting point for the valleys above.

The town has a historic synagogue from 1895, a reminder of its old Jewish community, and a small local history museum covering the region. Around it, Racha is known for its cured ham and for Khvanchkara wine, made further down the valley.

People come to Oni for the walkers' country up the valley — the villages of Ghebi, Chiora and Glola — and for the mineral-water resorts above the town. The stone carving at Nikortsminda Cathedral, down the valley, is another reason to stop in the area.
