At a glance

Georgia lets citizens of more than 90 countries and territories (the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Gulf states, most of Latin America and the former Soviet states, among others) enter without a visa and stay up to one full year. A few more nationalities are visa-free for shorter periods under bilateral agreements: for example China (30 days per visit, 90 in 180), Iran (45 days) and Peru (90 in 180). Most other nationalities need a visa: about 30 can get a short-stay e-Visa online at evisa.gov.ge, and the rest must apply at a Georgian embassy or consulate. Anyone holding a valid visa or residence permit of one of about 50 listed countries (such as the US, the UK or a Schengen state) can enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Since 1 January 2026, tourists must carry health and accident insurance for their whole stay.

06

The e-Visa

Apply at https://www.evisa.gov.ge. Fee: USD 20 + 2% service fee (e-Visa FAQ; the portal's country check returns a USD 20 fee for every eligible nationality). Not refundable, including if the visa is refused. The C5 e-Visa (tourism, up to one year) costs USD 300 where offered. Indian applicants must also complete a DuVerify step (USD 15).. Processing: Decision within 5 working days (MFA); the portal says this may be extended to 10 working days if extra checks are needed (the e-Visa FAQ says 'not less than 5 working days'). You must confirm your email within 1 hour and pay within 5 hours, or the application is cancelled..

07

Passport validity

Visa-free travellers: the passport must be valid on the day you enter and for your whole stay, so it does not expire while you are in Georgia (MFA FAQ). e-Visa applicants: the passport must remain valid at least 3 months beyond the visa's validity, must have been issued within the last 10 years, and must be undamaged with no unofficial notes; the e-Visa FAQ also asks for at least 2 blank pages, which the MFA FAQ says is not needed for e-Visa applications.

08

If you hold a visa or residence permit of another country

Under Government Resolution No. 256, foreigners who hold a valid visa and/or residence permit of any of these countries can enter Georgia without a Georgian visa and stay 90 days in any 180-day period: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark (incl. Faroe Islands and Greenland), Estonia, Finland, France (incl. French Polynesia and New Caledonia), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands (incl. Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles), New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom (incl. its overseas territories and Crown Dependencies), and the United States. The visa or permit must be valid on the day you cross the border. Since 16 May 2025, citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen who use a multiple-entry visa or residence permit of the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait or Oman need that document to be valid for at least one more year on the day they enter. An Israeli visa only counts as a physical stamp in the passport; electronic Israeli visas are not accepted at the Georgian border. (The MFA's own page also lists North Macedonia, which is not in the Resolution No. 256 text published by the MFA; treat that entry as unconfirmed.)

09

Travel insurance

Since 1 January 2026 (Law of Georgia 'On Tourism'), every tourist entering Georgia must show a valid health and accident insurance policy, on paper or electronic, in Georgian or English. It can come from a Georgian or a foreign insurer, must cover at least GEL 30,000, and must cover the whole stay including arrival and departure days. The policy must state: the parties to the contract, covered territory, subject matter, start and end dates, insured risks, sum insured (limits), and the premium with place and terms of payment. Exempt: holders of diplomatic and special visas; holders of diplomatic, official, service and special passports; accredited staff of diplomatic missions, consulates and international organisations and their accredited family members; people whose entry is covered by Georgia's international treaties; and international road freight and passenger drivers.

10

Applying at an embassy or consulate

If you need a visa but the e-Visa is not open to you (or you want a long-term visa), book an appointment through the MFA E-Application System (geoconsul.gov.ge/en/register/visit), then hand in the signed application form and all documents in hard copy at a Georgian embassy or consulate. You can apply in a third country only if you hold a multiple-entry visa or residence permit there that is valid 3 months longer than the visa you want. Decision times: short-term visa 10 calendar days, long-term visa 30 calendar days, D5 immigration visa 10 calendar days. Short-term visas: single-entry up to 30 days; multiple-entry visas can be valid up to 5 years, but you can stay no more than 90 days in any 180. The MFA lists a USD 20 service fee for ordinary visas; confirm the amount with your consulate. A refusal can be appealed within 10 business days, and the appeal must be in Georgian or come with a certified Georgian translation.

Recent changes and notes

A visa or visa-free status does not guarantee entry: the Border Police make the final decision and may ask for proof of the purpose of the trip, accommodation, funds and insurance.

You can work or be self-employed only within the Labour Migration rules in force from 1 March 2026; see labourmigration.moh.gov.ge.

Overstay fines (MFA FAQ): up to 3 months over, GEL 1,000 and a 6-month entry ban; up to 1 year over, GEL 2,000 and a 2-year ban; more than 1 year over, GEL 3,000 and a 3-year ban; breaking transit rules, GEL 500.

Transit: you need no visa if you stay in the international transit area. Airline, rail and sea crew and passengers changing carrier can transit without a visa for up to 10 days if they hold the right to enter their destination.

Holders of a Georgian residence permit (or refugee/humanitarian temporary residence permit) need no visa while the permit is valid. Holders of a UN laissez-passer can stay visa-free for 1 year.

Ethnic Georgian 'compatriots' living abroad whose citizenship would otherwise need a visa can enter and stay up to 30 days without one.

e-Visas cannot be extended inside Georgia. Each traveller, including children, needs their own e-Visa and passport.
